The Olive Tree café has always been the talk of Thebarton for more than its aromatic coffee and fine flavours as a café.
The Olive Tree Café was once a general store. Former owner, Stan Varlangos arrived in Adelaide from a little country town on the west coast in 1951 together with his young family and a desire to serve the multicultural community of Thebarton.
His general store offered bank, postal services, and freshly handpicked fruit and veg purchased from the iconic East End Markets.
Thebarton then was a bustling suburb where many of the Greek Migrants had arrived not knowing a word of English. Stan Varlangos offered them a hub to shop, eat and socialise. Years later his son in-law took over the store with the same desire to serve the community.
